Abstract
Adipose tissue (AT) stores the largest energy depot and provides energetic fuel for mammals. Currently, AT is conceived as a dynamic organ in the sophisticated control of catabolism and anabolism. Two types of AT, brown and white, are distinct in cell structure and functionality. Brown AT has the ability of nonshivering thermogenesis. White AT is the common site to store excess energy in the form of triglycerides. Understanding the underlying molecular mechanisms regulating AT development provides important implications to improve meat quality and ameliorate human metabolic diseases. ? 2014 Elsevier Ltd.
