Abstract
There are three aspects about the interaction of Zen and poetry. One is the Zen's
expression way in poems, another is the Zen's thought in poems, the other is the Zen's
Metaphor in poetry's criticism, those are all from the works of Scholar-officials and
monk-poets.
I've done the research of Zen and poetry for ten years and have published a book
about the first and second aspects of above-mentioned. Now this project will begin the
study of the third aspect. For the recent two years, I've ever written two papers about
this field. One is "The Zen's Metaphor in Su Shih's Criticism on Poetry", the other is"
". They were all issued in "The Journal of the Center for Buddhist Studies". Through
the research, I found it was a start point of Zen's metaphor in Su Shih's poetics and it
was caused by the interaction of Confucian-Buddhist and related to Wenzichan.
"Wenzichan-Zen as expressed in written language" and "Poetry based on written
language " in late Northern Song Dynasty have long been put off by critics due to
their formalistic inclination. There must be many valuable problems in it. Whish is
the motive of this project.
So, this project will take a watch in the interaction between Zen and poetics among
the period of Northern Song Dynasty, especially through examining materials related
to Zen, poetic texts and Zen practitioners' and scholar-officials' activities. Firstly, I'll
try to compare the early Zen with Northern Song Dynasty's Zen, depict the historical
development of them and examine various implementation and significance of "
Wenzichan". Then, I'll analyze poetic texts, present the etymological Zen in the poetic
terms and find out the influences of Zen in poetics.
The interaction of Zen and poetry progressed to the climax in Northern Song
Dynasty, I guess this project will present the important analysis of this period's Zen
and poetics.
