Abstract
As a result of Taiwan’s economical development in the past 40 years, the social structure has changed as a multicultural and open society, meanwhile, religious groups and religious activities have emerged like mushroom growth. According to the Ministry of the Interior Affairs, legitimate religion has reached 25 different groups, and total population for various religions is approximately 1,655,269 persons.
This research applies the so-called urban activity analysis method to investigate the relationship between religious activities and their land uses. Based on Taipei area, this research targets on the land uses of five religious groups, namely, Taoism, Buddhism, I-kuan-dao, Christianity, and Catholicism. Firstly, this research introduces the present development of various religious activities and then analyzes the religious activities and their land use demand characteristic. Through field investigation and interviews, environmental impacts and problems of religious activities are analyzed. Furthermore, trends of religious activities are identified.
The process of urbanization has also affected the form of religious activities. Moreover, religious facilities (temple/church) are related to different land uses and public facilities. In fact, it was found that the social importance of temple plaza and church spaces was neglected in the past! Regarding the future religious development, potential trends are summarized as follows: (1) All religious activities will strengthen their contents; (2) Religious events with high tourism potential will be developed toward large-scale festivals; (3) Tradition and modern religious culture arts will be integrated; (4) Religions will be deepened in knowledge and education activity; (5) Less negative environmental impacts; (6) More interactions with local community; (7) More charity activities will be conducted;(8)More interchanges among various religion-cultural activities.
