Abstract
Meconium peritonitis is rare in neonates. The aim of this study is to review and analyse neonates with meconium peritonitis presenting to National Taiwan University Hospital from April 1990 to March 1999. Twenty-five patients with meconium peritonitis were collected. Twenty-two were proved by surgical and pathological findings. The other three patients who did not receive surgical intervention were diagnosed by radiography and sonography. In the 22 cases proven by surgery, the fibroadhesive type was found in nine cases, the pseudocystic type in eight and the generalized type in five. For the fourteen cases with gastrointestinal obstruction, the most common gastrointestinal anomaly was intestinal atresia (9/14). Intestinal perforations were found in 15 patients: four at the jejunum, ten at the ileum and one at the cecum. The mortality rate was 8% (2/25). Consequently, early prenatal sonographic diagnosis and surgical intervention are important for patients with meconium peritonitis.
