Abstract
It has been found in the literature that
involvement in the internet interpersonal
interactions is a significant predictor of the
internet addiction. Also, low self-esteem and
similar personalities are significantly
correlated with internet addiction. However,
we believe that neither interaction interpsonal
engagement nor self-esteem are sufficient
condition for the internet addiction. The joint
effect of some personality factors together
with some specific internet engagement
would lead to internet addiction. The current
results first replicated the previous findings
that low self-esteem, ambivalence in close
relationships, anxiety and internet
interpersonal involvement, especially the
engagement in virtual communities are
predictive of internet addiction. More
importantly, we also found that the effect of
involvement in virtual community on internet
addiction was mediated by ambivalence in
close relationships. Also, the effect of
self-esteem on internet addiction was
mediated by the uncertainty of self-concept.
These results together point to the conclusion
that the variant impact of internet would have
a negative effect on the individuals when the
individuals themselves have relatively
chaotic internal working model. The
individuals would then have trouble
integrating their experiences in the internet
and got entrapped by the approach-avoidence
conflict of internet usage.
