Abstract
The up-to-date power line communication (PLC) technologies enable high-quality video streaming in digital homes. However, video streaming over power lines is sensitive to interference in the power line environment. The interference caused by electrical appliances, for example, may cause packet losses and even reduce channel bandwidth. To cope with the hostile environment, information of channel bandwidth is critical to robust video streaming. However, existing bandwidth estimation (BWE) methods developed for the Internet or wireless networks are inadequate for power line networks due to the difference in media access control scheduling policies and channel noise characteristics.
In this thesis, we first investigate the characteristics of in-home power line networks and present a new BWE scheme for PLC. Second, we integrate the BWE scheme with two types of video streaming techniques, multiple-description coding (MDC) based and scalable video coding (SVC) based, to enhance the quality of service (QoS). Experimental results show that the proposed BWE scheme achieves good estimation accuracy, and that the MDC-based and SVC-based video streaming techniques provide robust video streaming over the power line network.
