Abstract
One of the most important issues of electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) is to prolong their driving range. And to improve the ability of energy recovery through regenerative braking is an effective way to extend driving range of EVs. Besides, regenerative braking is also a critical factor for brake performance.
When an EV’s brake is applied, it is difficult to ensure good energy recovery and brake performance at the same time. Several strategies have been proposed and implemented in the past for control of regenerative braking and brake force distribution of EVs. However, most of these strategies and systems are for EVs and HEVs with single motor or generator on front wheels. Therefore, energy can only be recovered through the front wheels.
The strategy is designed to maximize regenerative energy recovery without sacrificing the braking performance of the vehicle. Also, the safety issue of braking control strategy is discussed in this study. The strategy is partly implemented on the Vehicle Control Unit (VCU) of the single motor EV, and road test is applied to make the simulations of dual motor system more authentic. Finally, the simulations show good agreement with the design target.
