Abstract
There has been a strong association
between man being and dogs for many
thousands of years. Dogs were important
for the provision of food, transport, and as a
focus for religious worship at early days.
However, the role of pet dogs in human
family, following further industrialized
lifestyle of human society including Taiwan,
have changed significantly and become
more and more important. Under this
circumstance, the subjects of "humananimal
bond" have been emphasized
continually and further studied in recent 30
years. The aims of this study are, (1) to
understand the details of pet dog selection
of the owners in Taipei area, and, (2) to
understand the factors which can influence
pet dog selection of the owners through
questionnaire survey. The results showed
that the main reasons of owner's choice the
pet dog were emotional and irrational (54%)
and most of dogs were chosen by outer
attribute. Examination on the model of the
influence of pet dog selection on owner-dog
bond revealed that "expectation of owners
on their pet dogs" was the most significant
variable.
