Abstract
Objective: Reconstruction of eyelid deformities, eyelid defects, or contracted anophthalmic sockets requires suitable grafts to achieve good cosmetic and functional outcome. Recently, hard palate mucosal grafts have been successfully applied in oculoplastic reconstruction. We report our experience using these grafts. Patients and Methods: From August 1999 to September 2000, ten patients received hard palate mucosal grafts; seven patients had lower lid retraction complicated by exposure keratopathy, two had eyelids with defects after malignant tumor excision, and one had a contracted anophthalmic socket. Results: After surgery, all seven patients with lower lid retraction had less scleral show and had proper lower eyelid position without corneal problems. The patients with malignant eyelid tumors had good cosmetic results after tumor excision followed by reconstruction with palatal grafts and local skin flap. The patient with the contracted socket was able to wear a prosthesis after grafting surgery. There was no major morbidity of the donor site. Little shrinkage occurred in these grafts during follow-up. Conclusion: Hard palate mucosal grafts are readily accessible, and provide good structural stability. Te cosmetic and functional outcomes are encouraging.
