Abstract
Illinois coal-derived activated carbons (ICDACs) were prepared in a fluidized bed reactor. Mercury adsorption tests were then compared with a simulated flue gas. The gas stream contained 40-60 μ g/Nm 3 Hg /HgCl 2 at 135°C and 1 atm. Hg 0 adsorption capacity and reactivity of some ICDACs were higher than those for FGD. However, FGD demonstrated better HgCl 2 adsorption capacity. ICDACs were also treated with sulfur at 200 and 600°C to evaluate the effectiveness of sulfur impregnation for mercury capture. Sulfur impregnation significantly improved HgCl 2 capture. Overall, the results indicate that the adsorption mechanisms of Hg 0 and HgCl 2 on ICDACs may be different.
