Abstract
Contamination and purification involves the demarcation and territorialization of bodies. With the rise of hygiene modernity, technological objects concerning purification have increasingly affected how the bodily contamination is defined, mediated and transferred. This article discusses technological objects in relation to the territorialization of the body based on the example of personal hygiene products, particularly tissue paper and sanitary napkin. It is argued that (1) technological objects mediate the "biological body" in its boundary management and territory maintenance through the elimination, transference and concealment of excreted body fluids; (2) the symbolic order causing stigma, abjection, shamefulness and risks in specific social contexts also amplify the tension of "social body" in its expansion, demarcation, and retreat. Hygiene products are therefore weapons for defending the boundary but might also be the symbol of stigma; (3) given environmentalism, the body reconstructs its connection with nature as the hygiene products are recycled and labeled more environmental friendly, which exemplifies a cross-boundary notion highlighting the "environmental body" and which also confirms a hybrid body. The author concludes that we should consider the material politics and ethics inherent in the territorialization of the body.
