Abstract
This paper intends to analyze the semantic structure that supports polysemic characteristics shown by a Japanese verb “hashiru (to run)”. By applying cognitive linguistic theories, this paper clarifies how the semantic components called the prototypical category forms the main meaning of “hashiru”. The paper examines to what extent semantic relationships based on the outward growth of a lexical network by extension from prototypes are directly involved with production of new polysemic meanings. Based on the facts found by the analysis, as a conclusion, the paper categorizes 20 polysemic meanings that the verb “hashiru” expresses, and clarifies how semantic relationships among these 20 polysemic meanings are extended from prototypes.
