Abstract
This paper examines technological change and its impact on production behavior and costs for the Taiwan telecommunications service industry during 1961- 1993. The percentage of telephones connected to central offices with electronic switching facilities and the percentage of international calls with access to direct dialing facilities are two technical change indicators, which are incorporated into a variable translog cost function for estimation in output- augmenting form. We find that on average the annual rate of variable cost reduction due to technological change for this industry is 0.1% in the study period.
