Abstract
The most important works of the Mao Poetry School in the Han Dynasty include Mao Zhuan and Zheng Jian. During the Tang Dynasty, Kong Yingda and others wrote the Maoshi Zhengyi on the basis of Maoshi yishu by Liu Zhuo and Liu Xuan. Zhengyi was originally a single piece of article. In the Southern Sung, the shu, zhuan, jian, and zhengyi of the Mao School were all put together along with the original scriptures (jingwen), resulting inthe complete edition called Maoshi Zhushu. Since the Maoshi Zhushu include interpretations of Mao School from different periods of times, an investigation of all these interpretations as well as their inter-relationships will yield significant insights into the continuity and evolution of the hermeneutic tradition of the Mao School. This paper is dedicated to such investigation. Other than exploring the essential contents as well as the continuity and evolution of the Mao School interpretations, we also intend to shed some critical lights on the advantages and disadvantages of the school's hermeneutic methodology. The paper is divided into the following sections: (1)Introduction (2)The Structure of the Maoshi Zhushu (3)The Essentials of the Maoshi Zhushu Interpretations (4)The Contiunity and Evolution of the maoshi Zhushu Interpretations (5)The Hermeneuti Methodolgy of the Maoshi Zhushu: A Critical Perspective (6)Conclusion By way of this investigation, we hope to reach a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of the hermeneutic legacy of Maoshi Zhushu.
