Abstract
Symphonie fantastique is judged as successful by Edward T. Cone, but is reproached by the nineteenth-century critic Franz Brendel as deprived of beauty. Does this judgmental clash mean that at least one of the critics is wrong? In case if we accept one of the two judgments, is it necessary to reject the other? If not, how can such a judgmental clash be understood and incorporated into our systems of intellectual acquisition, and be recognized as something other than the result of inconsistent human activity? This project will apply Hans-Georg Gadamer’s hermeneutics as explored in his book Wahrheit und Methode to the above musical interpretations and judgments. The purpose is to explain how conflicts of musical value judgments and interpretations can be viewed and integrated, without falling into the trap of “every goes.” In so doing, Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique will be analyzed in detail respectively under the aesthetic perspectives of the two critics.
