Abstract
A study was undertaken to identify the intermediates formed during the ozonation of p-nitrophenol. Several hydroxylated aromatics, carboxylic acids, nitrate ion and polymerization of the phenolics were observed in the reaction. 4-Nitrocatechol was identified by a method of acetylation with subsequent GC/MS analysis. p-Nitrophenol was found to undergo oxidative coupling on ozone treatment as evidenced by ESI-MS. Intermediates and final products of the reaction have been measured as a function of time using HPLC. According to the results, a possible reaction pathway of ozonation of p-nitrophenol was proposed.
