Abstract
LED Lighting is the one of most expected application for LED industry not only for its expected rapid expansion of market size but also expected as environment-friendly and energy-saving products, which can achieve more than three fourth of energy saving at electricity usage and more than 25 times longer life time with LED bulb compared to that of Incandescent bulb at the same lumens, as result total cost (energy cost + bulb cost over 10 years) of LED bulb is less than one fourth of that of incandescent bulb. Not just for the great expansion in LED industry but LED lighting is the one of the potential candidates that can help energy-saving issue. Firstly, as well-known, global energy consumption is still mostly relaying on fossil energy at rate of 81%, followed by nuclear at rate of 2.8% and renewable energy at rate of 16.2% worldwide according to “Renewable energy share of global final energy consumption 2009 [1]. Secondary, “U.S. EIA Estimate of Global Oil Peak” estimated that global oil peak would be 2016. Furthermore, consumption of energy is rapidly increasing by global population growth as well as rapid growth of emerging countries, primary energy production of emerging counties is accounted for 35% [2]. Although LED technology is not direct solution of creating new electricity generation technology however it will be one of the a valid and feasible way to contribute for energy-saving issue in different dimension by its technology development and innovation. Although the total cost ownership of LED bulb already became much greater than that of Incandescent bulb, still the unit price of LED bulb itself is far more expensive, which makes penetration rate of LED bulb still low. With this research, I would like to make further investigation on total cost ownership of LED bulb compared with current existing incandescent bulb in different counties in point view of ROI (Return on Investment) and would like to propose innovative self-sustaining business model to speed up adopting LED technology in household lighting where LED bulb penetration is still low.
