Abstract
Cooperative collection development is a very important issue for American
academic libraries. Literature review indicates that the consortia of academic
libraries have been actively involved in the matter of group purchasing of electronic
resources. On the other hand, the process of either interlibrary loan or document
delivery has become much more efficient by the usage of Internet. Libraries do save
money by purchasing the electronic resource collaboratively, but electronic resource
is not necessarily the good resource for cooperative collection development. Budget
shrinkage has made it not easy for a library to take the primary collecting
responsibility. Cooperative collection development is still a faraway goal for
academic libraries.
