Abstract
Western theories of evolution were first introduced into China in the late
nineteenth century and ever since had exerted multifaceted influences on the
development of modern Chinese thought. Indeed, before the rise and triumph of
Marxist materialism in the 1930s, evolutionary theories had served as the dominant
framework for the development of modern Chinese intellectuals’ world views and
their views on history and values. This study proposes to examine an important
aspect of this history that has long been ignored by scholars of China: the impact of
evolutionary theories on the unfolding of modern Chinese moral thinking during the
period of 1895-1923.
