Abstract
There are eighty-two artifacts from Oceania in the ethnographic collection at Department of Anthropology, National Taiwan University. Five individuals had contributed seventy-two of this collection during Japanese colonial era. I will follow three of these five individuals and trace their connection with New Guinea or Micronesia on the one hand, and Taiwan on the other hand. Although these three persons, a career explorer, a navy Admiral, and a botanist differed tremendously in their background
and professions, their nexus with Oceania were motivated or innocently supported by the expansion of Japanese Empire. Their various routes within the Empire reflect the multiplicity of forces behind empire-building.
