Abstract
The proper characterization of the variability of soil/rock properties for a specific site (including inherent variability and transformation uncertainty) is necessary for reliability-based design as well as for the determination of soil/rock characteristic values. This chapter reviews some useful sources that provide site-specific statistics for the inherent variability of soil/rock properties (e.g., site-specific mean, COV, and SOF). The emphasis is placed on the site-specific statistics extracted from some soil/rock property databases compiled by the author of this chapter. The soil/rock property databases can also be used to calibrate generic transformation models, but the transformation uncertainty is usually significant. The hierarchical Bayesian model (HBM) recently proposed by the author ofthis chapter may reduce the transformation uncertainty significantly. A real example isadopted to illustrate this reduction in the transformation uncertainty.
