Abstract
Two dynamic models have been proposed to portray the adsorption of bulk liquid mixtures to selective adsorbent surfaces. A measure of the selectivity and a separation index for adsorbate-adsorbent combinations are defined. Unlike conventional approaches, the present analysis is based upon dynamic considerations, and therefore, provides a way of describing both the transient and steady-state behaviors of the phenomenon. The steady-state results of the present models reduce to that derived from thermodynamic analysis, as a special case. In general, the present analysis yields different equilibrium representations.
