Abstract
Bearings are the key component that decide the performance of dental handpieces. The friction causing by ball bearings are the main reason that angular velocity can''t go faster. This Thesis investigates the property of aero bearings and magnetic bearings. A cartridge that integrates radial aerostatic bearing and axial passive magnetic bearing has been designed. Separable orifice restrictor, which makes the manufacturing process more accurate, more effective and cheaper, is been developed. Gas film around the spindle and the exclusive permanent magnet rings supports the rotating. And the dimension of the cartridge can fit in with dental handpieces using nowadays. It is proved that friction and noise of Magnetic-Aerostatic bearing can be much lower than conventional bearings. But problems in accuracy of spindle manufacturing and surface roughness lead to unstable rotating and self rotating phenomenon, which severely limit the angular velocity.
