Abstract
Let F q be the field with q elements and let G = PGL n (F q ) or PSL n (F q ) act on F q (x 1 ,…, x n−1 ) , the rational function field of n − 1 variables. Then F q (x 1 ,…, x n−1 ) G is purely transcendental over F q . In fact, a set of n − 1 generators of F q (x 1 ,… x n−1 ) G , over F q is exhibited. The case n = 2 is treated by direct computation.
