Abstract
This paper discusses how to apply public participation geographic information system (PPGIS) to survey the traditional territories of the indigenous peoples and to empower the indigenous peoples. This study used GIS technology to promote local participation and to integrate the traditional knowledge of the aboriginal communities in surveying traditional territories. This study also achieved two other objectives. First, by connecting the local context and applying GIS technology to prepare the geographic data, we were able to conduct a training program of community mapping for the people of the Smangus community. Second, we were able to assess the impact of PPGIS on the empowerment and marginality of the indigenous peoples at the scales of community and ethnic group. The usefulness and limitation of PPGIS are also highlighted in this paper.
