Abstract
Over the past few decades, the most revolutionary creation that influenced our lifestyle was probably the “Internet”. With the ability to transfer data, which contains images, vocal sounds, and documents across the world with a simply mouse click, it changes the way we live and the way people communicate. Now we are given the ability to talk on the Internet at no cost, and leave voice memo or message to our friends with a computer. Internet has slowly become part of our daily life, which we cannot live without. Over 90% of the world has Internet connection and over 90% of the world’s population uses Internet daily. Billions of users are using communication software such as Skype, Windows Messenger, Facebook, and AOL Messengers, which enable the user to talk freely to their friends either through message or voice.
When Skype hit the markets, many people have come across the idea of replacing their traditional telephone system with this free Internet software. The result was negative, because consumers have to turn on the computer and stay on-line at all time. Most of all, connection ability of Skype users are not complete convenient and free of charge. This idea quickly brought attention to many corporate selling consumer goods. They begin to think of using Internet bandwidth to create voice accessibility with simple and cost effective solutions. The idea is very simple, it was working with local operator and bundle Internet and traditional phone cable together and generating a new business model, which is today’s Internet phone, or we call it VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)
Early adoption group quickly pick-up this new technology but the feedbacks are negative. The voice latency is unacceptable and the main issue is Internet speed is just too slow. To solve this problem, better software implementation is needed but most important of all, faster Internet access. To improve the latency and the performance of Internet, we have been upgrading the traditional copper cable to optical fibers cable. Optical fibers can modulate at a rate as high as 111 Gbit/s compared with 10~40 Gbit/s in typical deployed system. This kind of speed allows user to have fast enough Internet to have high quality VOIP service and regular Internet usage at the same time and this is the beginning of VOIP phone.
Looking back in the VOIP market growth, we have to trace back to 2004 where Skype announces the first free VOIP software available for download. Together with other VOIP vendors such as Vonage, the first wave of VOIP market growth begins. With all the necessary technology and environment to precede this revolutionary software debuted. This paper will focus on the possibility of replacing traditional telephone server with Internet base phone then elevated Internet base media phone; also will study the current market and potential business strategies for this innovated idea.
