Abstract
The Unequal Treaties that imposed on China in the nineteenth-century have
been said to be kind of national humiliation. However, this view is in conflict
with the belief of most economists that free trade increases a country’s welfare.
Taiwan, as one of the treaty ports, provides us a chance to look into the impact
of the sudden trade liberalization. In this article, we discussed the main export
good, sugar, in south Taiwan in the nineteen-century. We examined the two
most important markets of Taiwanese sugar, mainland China and Japan, and
found that the Treaty of Tientsin had caused changes in the structure of trade
in south Taiwan and helped promote sugar production.
