Abstract
Background and Purpose:A new design of the powered mobile stander has been developed within intention to promote optimal development of neuromusculoskeletal and movement-related functions for children with cerebral palsy (CP). In order to drive this new stander, some head control and upper body strength are required. Head control plays an important role in orientation, balance, and even the ability of participation. Therefore, the purpose of this report is to describe head sway of a child with spastic diplegia on this powered mobile stander. Case Descriptions: The participant was a 5-year-old girl with spastic diplegia CP, classified by Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) as level IV, following multiple level surgery. Measurement is designed to use the two-dimensional motion analysis system (Dahua Technology Co. Ltd., Hangzhou, China) to record the trajectory of the reflective marker on the head during the driving forward for 1 meter with framerate in 300 fps. Outcomes: The results showed her head trajectories in sagittal plane are similar to her peer did. As for head sway, the maximal angular rate of her head-C7–T7 angle for a sudden stop was 1.7 rad/s. Discussion: According to this pilot report, the extents of head sway did not meet the risk of neck injury, because the angular rate of the child with CP was not over the predicted infant-specific injury thresholds (rotational head velocities of ~20 rad/s) while driving this powered mobile stander. Clinical Relevance: There is no risk of neck injury for children with GMFCS level IV to drive this powered mobile stander. Further research is warranted for determining the effectiveness for balance control of this stander.
