Abstract
Abstract Travel writing massively appeared in Taiwan in the 90’s. Because of the change in both social and economic condition, the way and the concept of travel showing in writings seemed to vary quite a lot. Accordingly, a new perspective of treating” travel writing “as a genre have dominated the discussion of these literature works since. In Taiwan, prose is the major form of travels. And“travels”have always been a traditional type in Chinese prose, thus in this thesis, the question begins with whether we should see travel writing as a new” genre”, or should we try to analyze it under the tradition of travels? What difference will the two contexts provide? The thesis is a study on Su Kuo-chih’s prose. He’s a major icon of Taiwan’s travel writing. As a constant traveler and a writer, the self-image shown in his works is a rather interesting construction , combined with his sentimental imagination largely borrowed from films and fictions ,and the ideal life-style he’d like to realize in his own life. The “showing” of his life through his writing is a performance about the pursuit of “personal space” and the ”easiness” of living. And the pursuit may also be the reason that drives him to always be ”on the road”. Through the conclusion, the thesis intends to take the focus back to prose writing. Try to connect travel and the other topics written by Su Kuo-chih, find the similarity in the expression. Also to balance between the mere emphasis on the formation of prose art and the significance of topics written. Hope to obtain a better interpretation of Su Kuo-chih’s prose.
