Effects of Na+ Amount on Elastic Properties and Structure of 7056 Glass

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate how alkali ions affect the structure and elastic properties of 7056 glass by controlling the amount of the alkali contained in least portion of 7056 glass, which is Na+. The result of Brillouin scattering is observed to have a rising trend in both longitudinal and transverse phonons when the amount of Na+ increases, but an exceptional drop appears at the Na+ amount of standard 7056 glass. This result concludes that basically shear modulus, bulk modulus and Young's modulus will increase when adding more Na+ but a sudden drop of elastic moduli occurs on standard 7056 glass. Since in Raman spectra, Q1, Q3 and Q4 are observed to have intensity change, it is explained that the structural changes of Q species are based on the equations: Q4 + O2- = 2Q3, Q3 + O2- = 2Q2 and Q2 + O2- = 2Q1 and the elastic properties and glass structure are mainly influenced by the amount of Q1 and Q3. © 2012 King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals.
