Presence and Expression of Human Papillomavirus Types 16 and 18 DNA Sequences in Cervical Carcinomas

Abstract
DNA of human papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18 has been found closely associated with cervical carcinomas. We have analyzed DNA from a larger number of cervical carcinomas, for the state and expression of the HPV 16 and 18 genome. Among 77 samples, HPV 16 genome was found in 35 (45.5%) while HPV 18 in 14 (18.2%). HPV 18 genome was associated more closely with adenocarcinomas than with squamous cell carcinomas. HPV 16 and 18 genomes were mutually exclusive in terms of their tissue existence. The viral DNA was present in the tissue mainly as integrated forms, although in some tissues there was episomal as well as integrated forms. The sites of HPV DNA integration were random. The copy number of HPV sequences varied greatly among different samples. Poly (A)+ RNA ranging from 1.1 kb to more than 5 kb were detected in HPV 16 or HPV 18 positive tissues using HPV 16 or 18 DNA probe. © 1988 Japanese Society of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
