Abstract
Parties compete for votes and form party identification by party’s idea and policy
platforms in a competitive party system. However, tensions between responding mass
opinion and insisting the core idea of party make changing on party policy platforms,
and the direction and speed of change is influenced by tensions. The analytical
framework used in this research is based on policy convergence theory and policy
styles theory in comparative policy studies. We try to sketch patterns of changing
party policy platforms by content analysis of ten important policy issues in Taiwan.
The research findings are the direction and speed of change is deeply influenced by
policy styles, party in office or in opposition, and the type of party competition. In
addition, studying the impact of party policy platforms on quality of democracy and
public policy is an important research issue for future study in Taiwan.
