The Creation of Cooper-Engraved Battle Prints in the Era of Emperor Qianlong: From “East Turkestan Campaign” to “Taiwan Campaign”

Abstract
This thesis consists of three parts. First, through utilizing the popular “Encyclopedie“ by Diderot, to understand how the French engravers of Paris conducted the order of “East Turkestan Campaign Print” from Qing-Long Emperor during late 18th century. Second, observe the different collection of the later production of “Taiwan Campaign Print”made by Qing’s imperial Palace, and through the analyze of Archives of the Imperial Workshop (or Huo-chi-tang, 活計檔), to rebuild the operation of cooper-engraved workshop in Qing Palace. Meanwhile, to elucidate how the artisans work in Palace learn and choose the appropriate French skills to cope with the demands from the emperor, and how this brand new workshop build from the ground up. Besides, the series of cooper-engraved battle prints are made to honor the important conquests which are later organized as“Record of Ten Perfect Accomplishments.”(or Shi-quan-wu-gong, 十全武功) Therefore, the third part of this thesis focus on revaluing the cooper-engraved battle prints, and then discuss “Lin Shuang-wen Incident”(林爽文事件) which described in “Taiwan Campaign Print.” Accordingly, examining the images to indicate the meaning of this incident of Qing-Long Emperor.
