This dissertation investigates the concept of sport in Modern China through the sport photographs published in the ‘The Young Companion’between 1927 and 1931. This research questions the common historical discourse on sport in Modern China based on nationalism, and tries to provide, through the analysis of photographs, a more thorough picture of the Chinese concept of sport in the 1920-30s.
