Abstract
Settlement research is one of the major themes of land use/cover change study. This research employs fractal theory to explore the distribution patterns of built-up areas for 1924, 1982, 1994. Box-counting method is used to measure fractal dimensions. Two driving factors are identified for the change of
the distribution patterns. There are road system and landform.
The results demonstrate the usefulness of fractal dimension on the analysis of settlement patterns. It is also fount that the fractal dimensions of built-up areas are highly related to: 1) the path densities; 2) the fractal dimensions of landform. It indicates that settlement development is coincident with
landform and the development of road system.
