Abstract
Chitosan/vinyl acetate graft copolymers were prepared by using a redox initiator. With further alcoholysis, chitosan/vinyl alcohol copolymers were obtained. During the adsorption of copper ion, two-stage behavior was observed. In the first stage, the adsorption was governed by both the diffusion and reaction; whereas only diffusion controlled the second stage. The diffusion coefficient increased with the amount of chitosan content. If cross-linked with the glutaraldehyde, both of the degree of swelling and adsorption quantity of copper decreased with the extent of cross-linking. In the cell culture of osteoblast, the addition of chitosan improves the adhesion of cells. An optimum composition was found for the chitosan/vinyl alcohol copolymers in the blood compatibility. After 48 hours, the copolymers were degraded completely.
