Abstract
This study focuses on the finance of Taiwan think tanks. The financial profile of the US and Japan think tanks are examined to provide reference framework. Seven aspects of think tanks finance are analyzed with the research results from four well established organizations of Taiwan think tanks. They include the following: 1. financial resources of think tanks. 2. the strategy of raising financial resources. 3. financial stability. 4. the autonomy of research. 5. competitor for funds. 6. operating costs. 7. the autonomy of expenditure.
Research findings include: 1. Categorizations of financial resources and financial stability are established for future research. 2. The autonomy of think tanks research is seldom affected by the source of funds. 3. Think tanks depended on single financial resources maintain more stable finance. 4. Research funding from government can provide stable financial resources for the operation of think tanks. 5. Universities are the main competitor for funds. The study proposes six recommendations for improving the financial development of Taiwan think tanks.
