Abstract
The aim of this study is to provide an introduction to the subject of public library provision for the baby boomer generation. Our main purpose is to assess the baby boomer’s perpections of the public library and identify any factors which would encourage more use.
In order to investigate the baby boomer’s perceptions of the public library service, this study used questionnaire and in-depth interview to collect data. We did analysis by comparing cases, focusing on the common phenomenon, which were later conceptualized and modelized. In addition to analysis the data of each case, the study catagorizes 25 interviewees’ data to six type according to their “life stage” and “the way of using the library”:retired-information seeking、retired-entertainment meeting、retired-life meaning fulfilling、non retired-information seeking、non retired-entertainment meeting、non retired- life meaning fulfilling.
According to the analysis, we finally suggest the future needs for the library services to the seniors. First, Three suggestions to the Information Center:to establish the tailored information desk for seniors, to increase both the quality and quantity of the Multimedia Center, and to conspire the information centers of the seniors;Then, the suggestion to the Learning Center is to keep providing the learning opportunities for seniors;Finally, the suggestion to the Activity Center is to combine the public library and the community.
