Abstract
Many rural settlements in Taiwan are experiencing a transforming process because of social and industrial development, which has changed their traditional lifestyle and space use. This research aimed at understanding the actual transformation of living spaces in a mini settlement by combining qualitative and quantitative approaches. Therefore, the research took Dali Settlement in Yi-Lan County as an example, setting three goals, and used several research methods described as follow.
First of all, by collecting local conception and viewpoint from fieldworks, the research tried to find out the main factors affecting spatial transformation in Dali Settlement. Secondly, the topology and space syntax theory were introduced to study Dali’s spatial topology in terms of movements and activities. At last, the research discussed the relationship between the results from topological analysis and the actually spatial experiences.
The research found that the topological analysis could reveal important spaces such as routes where residents frequently used. Furthermore, the results were also highly consistent with the actual movements and activities in residents’ daily lives. In conclusion, supported by qualitative data of local space uses and lifestyles, quantitative approaches could be applied to spatial study accurately and thoroughly.
