Abstract
Telecommunication technology and computerization have become equally Important in the field of library automation. There is no way to bypass the communication technology to reach a networking information era. The state of art and future development of Taiwan’s telecommunication environment was described. Telecommunication development history in the rest of the world (especially United States) was taken into account. 5 important roles in making a library moving toward a post-telecommunication stage, namely: 1.Local Area Network (LAN), 2.MODEM, 3.Value-Added Network (VAN), 4.Private Branch Exchange(DBX),5.Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN), were reviewed. Lastly, the impact to the library was mentioned and some recommendations to the librarian who wants to survive in this ever-changing world were provided.
