Abstract
Effects of Si on transformation temperatures and second phases in Ti50-xNi50Six, Ti50Ni50-xSix and Ti51Ni49-xSix shape memory alloys (SMAs) with x=1, 2 at.% are investigated. Three different second-phase particles located at grain boundaries are observed. They are χ-phase particles (Ti5Ni4Si1), λ1-phase particles (Ti2Ni3Si1) and Ti2(Ni, Si) particles. In addition to the formation of second phases, a small amount of Si remained in solid solution in the matrix of Ti-Ni-Si ternary SMAs. Experimental results show that, in the matrix, the effects of Ni+Si in combination on transformation temperatures of Ti-Ni-Si ternary SMAs are similar to Ni effects on those of as-quenched TiNi binary SMAs. © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V.
