Abstract
The mobilized shear strength behaviours of simulated soil materials are presented. Gaussian random field has been utilized to generate spatially variable soil. Various failure responses of soil subjected to simple shear stress state, including mobilized shear strength, location and angle of failure faces, are studied. Results of finite element analysis indicate mobilized shear strength of vertically variable soil can be simulated by purely mathematical method, as Limit Equilibrium Method in the following. Comparisons are made between strengths computed from FEM and LEMs, based on soil samples generated from Gaussian random field. The results suggest that mobilized shear strength of non-homogeneous soil under simple shearing can be captured by LEM without major deviation.
