Abstract
This study is to build up a conceptual framework and a relation between the
heritage conservation and the formation of the character of a place through the
analyses of the processes of a local community leaders’ involvement in local actions.
This paper presents the preliminary research result obtained in phase one.
At first, we propose a ‘Heritage Value Spectrum (H.V.S.)’which serves as an
analysis framework. Then, we try to define the whole value of local cultural and
ecological feature, including spiritual, long-term, hidden benefit, etc.
Second, we review some local heritage conservation programs to analyses their
local action processes . We expect to find some answers about how it works to make
up the sense of space, the environmental value and the concept of space. And then, we
try to build up a conceptual framework and a relation between heritage conservation
and place character.
Finally, we also want to know how the local community leaders make this
conceptual framework to be ‘localized’and to be ‘vernacular’.
These processes are not only constructing the character of the local community
space and environment, but also are building the totality, locality of living setting. The
transformation of an abstract, non-meaning space to a meaningful place is similar to
the processes mentioned as above.
This process analysis provides a solid base for what local people’s needs to
understand the nature of a sustainable society. Eventually, they can go ahead hand in
hand, and make steps towards a sustainable community.
