The normalcy of blood pressure in well-controlled hypertensive patients

Abstract
In an effort to investigate the normalcy of blood pressure (BP), we studied the ambulatory blood pressure monitoring measurements of 48 hypertensives whose casual BP were controlled to normal level (<140/90 mm Hg). Their casual BP was 132 ± 7/83 ± 6 mm Hg. Their BP averages were 126 ± 14/ 86 ± 10 mm Hg for the whole-day, 130 ± 15/88 ± 10 mm Hg for the daytime and 119 ± 14/82 ± 10 mm Hg for the nighttime measurement. The systolic BP (SBP) was found to be significantly higher in the casual measurement than in the whole-day average (p < 0.01). A reverse pattern was observed for diastolic BP (DBP; p < 0.05). The daytime BP averages were significantly higher than the nighttime ones (p < 0.0005 for SBP and p < 0.001 for DBP). The variabilities of BP were 16 ± 7/12 ± 4 mm Hg for the daytime and 12 ± 4/ 10 ± 4 mm Hg for the nighttime measurement. The variability was significantly greater for SBP than for DBP ( p < 0.05). This parameter was also greater for the daytime than the nighttime BP measurement (p < 0.001). The frequencies of SBP >140 mm Hg were 29 ± 27% in the daytime measurement and 12 ± 17% in the nighttime recording. Figures for DBP >90 mm Hg were 42 ± 29 and 28 ± 26%, respectively, for the corresponding measurements. The differences between daytime and nighttime were statistically significant (p < 0.001 for SBP and p < 0.01 for DBP). In addition, there was a wide range in the frequency of abnormal pressures. This report presents the characteristics of BP and valuable information in well-controlled hypertensive subjects.
