Abstract
The paper takes the issue of the construction of Taiwan futures market. Instead of unquestioningly accepting the idea of ‘path dependency’, the research critically reviews the literature on institutionalism, and tries to enrich the empirical case of financial geography and Neil Fligstein’s ‘political-cultural approach’. The paper is divided into five parts. Succeeding setting out the research inquiries and designs, the second chapter deals with the context of transformation of financial system in Taiwan. The third chapter tells the plot of legalization of futures trading in detail, and the focus is on the different options and arguments. Based on the story of institutionalized process, the forth chapter explicates two arguments: ‘market as political processes and ‘market as field’. The final chapter concludes the paper, and highlights the geographical implication in the market construction process.
