Abstract
The Chi Chi Earthquake occurred on Septanber 21 in the year of 1999, has caused dramatic trauma and serious hazards in central Taiwan. To recover and rebuild ten stricken by the earthquake is expected as an important social engineering at the turn of the century by the whole society. However, the rebuilding processes of the Central Region in Taiwan in general as well as each local community in specific provide the best opportunities of all for social scientist to observe and understand how the local societies are working. How local residents have to exhaust their entire social resources for rebuilding their homes and communities, so as how the outside world is connected to the local society by helping those communities are worthy of intensive observation and examination. It is the most vivid texts both for understanding the social processes of reproducing a local society and the possibility of achieving local sustainability. Nevertheless, communities with differential locational advantages in the market and in the geographical space have different opporWnities in receiving outside help and resources, which in some ways enhances the uneven recovering processes. This study investigates one of the five Pazeh¡¦s communities in Puli to document and analyze its rebuilding process and changes in community¡¦s spatial structure.
