UTD-type ray analysis of electromagnetic scattering from planar finite periodic structures

Abstract
This paper presents the UTD-type solution for the electromagnetic scattering from a periodic structure, analogous to the conventional UTD solution for the scattering from electrically large scatterers. The solution was built up based on Kirchhoff approximation of equivalent currents from a unit cell, within which the structure can be arbitrary. This solution provides a convenient way to interpret the scattering mechanism in terms of ray optics. Theoretical illustration and numerical examples are presented to demonstrate its feasibility.
