Abstract
A quantitative method was introduced for the total performance evaluation (TPE) in plant factory with artificial lighting (PFAL). The method can be used to evaluate spectra of artificial light sources, to evaluate various operating procedure, to evaluate light recipes, to evaluate nutrient recipes, and to evaluate the fast grow crops among given options. Totally, four indicators were defined. Using these indicators, one can compare his own system with others, knowing one's status and knowing still how far from the best among competitors. These indicators are: (1) QE ratio (Quantum vs Energy), in ?mol per joule. It is the factor evaluating not only the light source selected, but also the arrangement of light source, mounting distance from light source to growth panel, and usage of light reflectors. (2) Photon Yield (PY, in gFW per mole of photons measured on growth panel), (3) Degree Yield (DY, in gFW per degree of energy consumption), and (4) Overall QE ratio (in mole per degree). This value derived from PY divided by DY represents the photons measured on growth panel per energy consumed throughout overall growing stages (from sowing to harvest). PY and DY are tools for evaluation when the fresh weight of crops is of concern. If the focus is on the phytochemicals produced, the concept can still be applied, but the unit may change from gram into mg or else depending on the concentrations of the phytochemicals.
