Abstract
The bilateral filter is widely used in signal processing because it can remove the noise while preserving the edges. However, if the filter response decays fast with the value difference, then the noise with higher amplitude cannot be removed. By contrast, if the filter response decays slowly with the value difference, then the edge may not be preserved and the ridge and valley will be over-smoothed. In this work, two techniques are proposed to improve the bilateral filter. First, instead of using the value difference, we assign the filter response according to the difference of the smoother outputs. Second, we set the output as a combination of the bilateral filter output and the input and the weight is set by the difference of the input and its smoother version. With these techniques, the noise can be effectively removed while well preserving the edges, ridges, and valleys.
