Abstract
Background, Mortality of colorectal cancer can be reduced by fecal occult blood test. However, mortality reduction is partially due to further evaluation and management after a positive test. The purpose of this study was to investigate factors associated with referral compliance of abnormal fecal occult blood test.
Methods, Eight hundred and seventy four subjects joining in colorectal cancer screening of “Bureau of Health Promotion” at Taipei County in 2005 and had positive fecal occult blood test were identified. Two hundred and twenty six subjects who did not accept referral within 60 days were classified as non-compliant group. After frequency matching and sampling for the other positive fecal occult blood subjects, there were 219 subjects in non-compliant group. Telephone interviews were performed according to questionnaire designed under Health Belief Model. Answers of questions from same factors were summed up to present score of that factor. Multiple logistic regression was used to assess possible associated factors for referral compliance.
Results, One hundred and forty five subjects in compliant group and one hundred fifteen subjects in non-compliant group completed interview. Factors including “Perceived susceptibility” and “Cue to action: information” were positively associated with referral compliance. “Casual personality” was negatively associated with referral compliance”.
Conclusion, Three factors in Health Belief Model were associated with referral compliance after positive fecal occult blood test. Referral compliance rate could possibly be improved if the interventions will focus on these factors in the future.
